Packing Tips - Do's and Don'ts Print E-mail

Packing Do's:

  • Dishes and Glasses: Wrap your dishware and glasses in packing paper and/or bubble wrap. Make sure you use the 'print free' newspaper. For medium and long term storage use dish pack boxes. Be sure to label the boxes "FRAGILE", using a different color marker pen. That way the boxes will be easy to see when it comes time to stack those boxes on top of your box stacks.
  • Tape the Good Stuff: When wrapping up your collectibles or anything small and breakable, tape the item after you wrap it. This way and especially if another member of your packing team unwraps the precious object, they will avoid mistaking these items for excess paper to fill boxes.
  • Bubble Wrap: Line your dishware and precious item boxes with bubble wrap to provide additional protection. Limit movement within these boxes best you can with tightly scrunched wrapping paper balls.
  • Books: Pack books by laying them flat in book boxes. Alternate the bindings from front to back to prevent spine damage.
  • Kids: Get your wee ones involved and keep them busy by giving them each a large box to pack their toys in.

Packing Don'ts:

  • Food: Do eat or donate all food items to friends; family and local charities and food banks. Do not store any food items, or you will have unwanted guests. Who will in turn nest; and invite other strange creatures in, who will eat the first set of visitors, and before you know it you will have a thriving metropolis of bugs, who might damage books, papers, linens and other things.
  • And on that note, remember to start the process of cleaning appliances a few days before you start packing.
  • Insurance: Do not assume that your homeowners or renters insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. Check with your carrier.
  • Heavy Boxes: Be kind to yourself and the friends and family that agrees to hep you move. Do not pack your boxes so that they are too heavy to carry them. Books boxes can get very heavy, very quickly. Even if you are having a professional moving company coming to help you move, you may well still have to shuffle these boxes around before and after you move. And now would be a really bad time to hurt yourself.
